چکیده

The knowledge of water flow pathways and residence times in a catchment are essential for predicting the hydrological response to a rain storm event. Different experimental techniques are available to study these processes, which are briefly reviewed in this paper. To illustrate this, recent findings from the Weatherley catchment a 1.5 km 2 semi-arid headwater in South-Africa, are reported in this paper. Beside classical hydrometric measurements of precipitation and runoff different experimental techniques were applied to explore flow paths (i.e. soil moisture and groundwater measurements , natural tracers, and 2-D electrical resistivity to-mographies (ERT)).

The Contrasting Effects of Wildfire and Clearfelling on the Hydrology of a Small Catchment

A wild®re in an a€orested research catchment presented the rare opportunity to compare the hydrological e€ects of wild®re with the e€ects of clearfelling in the same catchment in the Jonkershoek Valley, in the south-western Western Cape Province of South Africa. The timber plantation, which occupies 57% of the 2 km catchment, had been clearfelled and re-planted to Pinus radiata roughly ®ve year...

Catchment-scale spatial variability analysis of soil hydro-physical properties in a semi-arid region of Iran

Soil hydrau-physical data are important for many hydrological modelings. They are the main variables controllingthe key processes such as water and chemicals movement and transport in the soil profiles. This study was conductedin order to analyze the spatial distribution of selected soil hydrau-physcial characteristics including infiltration rate(IR), saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), bulk...

Using a special empirical model to estimate sediment yield of Koohbord dam watershed in Kohgilouyeh County

Extended abstract Koohbord dam watershed with a total area of 38.29 square kilometers in Kohgiluyeh and Boyerahmad province is one of the watersheds without sedimentation data, which requires the use of empirical models to estimate the sediment for estimating sediment, so the results obtained through data is the basis of the management plans of dam watershed. In this research, using base maps ...

Water Balance Modeling in a Semi-Arid Environment with Limited in situ Data Using Remote Sensing in Lake Manyara, East African Rift, Tanzania

The purpose of this paper is to estimate the water balance in a semi-arid environment with limited in situ data using a remote sensing approach. We focus on the Lake Manyara catchment, located within the East African Rift of northern Tanzania. We use a distributed conceptual hydrological model driven by remote sensing data to study the spatial and temporal variability of water balance parameter...

Model based distributed water balance monitoring of the White Volta catchment in West Africa through coupled meteorological-hydrological simulations

Sustainable water management requires the quantification of the spatial and temporal changes of water balance variables. Fully distributed hydrological simulations of these variables are especially in regions with weak infrastructure challenging, because the required meteorological input data are often not available in a sufficient spatial and temporal resolution. One possibility to deal with t...
